Mathematics
EYFS
In EY we us concrete aids to visually demonstrate all maths concepts whether it is new learning or a revisit of the learning. In focus and independent work concreate aids are used but alongside these pictorial representations are used for the children to explore their learning independently.
Once they are comfortable solving problems using concrete and pictorial aids we will move onto solving abstract problems using numbers and symbols. This allows small steps to be built over time to help children understand the relationship between numbers and real world (concrete) to aid their understanding of mathematical concepts the children are learning.
Year 1
Year 2
Year 3
In Year three we regularly use manipulatives that can be handled and moved to develop understanding of a mathematical concept. We use Base 10 apparatus, Place Value Counters, multilink, Numicon and Cuisenaire Number Rods. We have found that by representing a maths concept with everyday objects, children can visualise, explore and manipulate them, giving easier access to mathematical knowledge and understanding. We use pictorial and written methods to show understanding.
Year 4
Year 5
Year 6
Even though we have been learning maths for many years in Year 6, we still use concrete resources to learn new concepts. For example, we might use two sided counters to introduce ratio and pictorial resources to look at new ideas in fractions. We also use bar models for example when solving more complex problems.
