Blackthorns welcome banner

At Blackthorns Community Primary Academy we believe in putting our pupils first. Their interests and questions shape our curriculum, and help to create our stimulating school which Ofsted has graded as Outstanding in all areas.

Our role within the local and wider community is very important to us. We work closely with our parents and carers and have a highly-skilled, passionate and dedicated team of teachers and support staff. We all work together to deliver the very best education for our pupils.

We want our pupils to reach their full potential when they are with us - and throughout their lives. That’s why we focus on creating motivated, independent, lifelong learners.

Our curriculum is based on the National Curriculum and is rich and inspiring, but more importantly it is adaptable. Pupils are involved in planning what and how they learn, so the curriculum reflects their interests and their needs. Our topic-based learning develops English and maths skills alongside the arts, humanities and PE.

Our Gold School Games Award means our happy children are healthy children too.

We aim to provide our pupils with the emotional and pastoral support they need; we make sure school is a place where they feel happy and safe.

We focus on the individual. We have a dedicated learning mentor, peer mediators, play leaders and a ‘buddy’ system which links every new Reception child with a Year 6 buddy.

"Pupils thrive at this school because their needs are met extremely well. They live up to adults’ very high expectations and succeed as a result."

"I like the fact that we have awesome lessons and teachers. We have the freedom to be good at different things and to have our own opinions."

Nothing helps children learn more than being in a happy and stimulating environment.

We don’t limit learning to the classroom. In fact we take every opportunity we can to learn outside. Every classroom has an outdoor learning space, and beyond that we have two large playgrounds, a field with astro turf, a pond, a woodland area and an Early Years garden.

Our curriculum also offers many wonderful opportunities to engage with art, music, drama and design.

We are part of the University of Brighton Academies Trust. A family of 15 infant, primary and secondary schools in Sussex, all graded as Good or Outstanding by Ofsted.

Excellence, innovation and integrity are the values that guide us. We support each other, sharing insights and best practice so we never stop improving.  Our mission is to deliver the best possible education for your child.

Being part of the Trust links us to the University of Brighton: a trusted education provider. We work closely with the University’s School of Education which Ofsted has judged as Outstanding for its teacher training programmes.
