KS1 & 2
Key Stage 1
Children in Years 1 and 2 are in Key Stage 1 of their education, having completed the Early Years Foundation Stage (EYFS) when they left Reception.
The children’s learning when they first enter Key Stage 1 is similar to the play-based learning from EYFS. Teachers slowly introduce whole-class inputs and activities, increasing these in quantity and length as the year moves on. Observations are made of the children’s play-based learning and this is used to inform the teachers’ planning for learning opportunities.
Our Key Stage 1 classes have a high level of Teaching Assistant support as the children begin to develop their independence and learning skills.
When children are in Key Stage 1, they are collected from the playground each morning by their class teachers. At the end of each day the class teachers ensure they are delivered back to their parents or whoever is collecting them.
Key Stage 2
Children in Years 3-6 are in Key Stage 2. At this stage the children are encouraged to be developing their independence. They enter and leave school independently at the start and end of the school day. They are also required to manage their time in the completion of homework. As most of our pupils live very close to the school, some walk to school on their own or with friends when they are in the older years. As a school, we do not encourage this until they are in Year 6, as we feel this will help them to prepare for secondary school.
As the children move up through Key Stage 2, they gain more responsibility within the school, with the older children taking on roles such as EYFS buddies, playground buddies, peer mediators, house captains, sports leaders, Head Boy and Head Girl.
The size of our school enables all of our children to know each other and work together as part of our school community.
