Our partnership with parents is very important for the development of all of our pupils. We operate an open door policy and are happy to speak to parents at the beginning or end of the school day.
We appreciate that some parents do not drop their children off or collect them from school and we are also happy to speak to parents on the telephone. There may be times when the class teacher is not available to see a parent and in these circumstances we will ensure that a convenient time is agreed as soon as possible. Mrs Brand is available to speak to parents on the playground most days, or appointments are available through the academy office.
Our parents are invited and encouraged to register with ParentMail 2 as this is an effective way of communicating with parents. A majority of letters are sent out directly via this service, meaning that parents receive information promptly. In the case of academy closures for severe weather, this information is communicated with parents through the ParentMail 2 system, among other methods.
Each year begins with our Start The Year Meeting. This usually involves parents gathering together in the hall initially for some information relating to the academy’s priorities and developments for that academic year. Following this, parents are invited to the different classrooms, where the class teachers give them information about the curriculum and day-to-day information for the year.
As and when there are new initiatives within the academy, workshops may be held to keep parents informed of these developments and to give them practical ways to support their child at home.
We regularly open the academy up for visits of current and prospective parents. During the Autumn Term, the open mornings and afternoons are predominantly aimed at prospective parents for the following year’s intake. Some of our older children take our visitors on tours around the academy and Mrs Brand is available to answer questions and talk to individual parents.
During the Summer Term, our open morning is an opportunity for anybody within our community to visit the academy. Children enjoy showing their parents and grandparents around the academy and staff are available to answer questions.
Written reports and Parent/Teacher Consultations
Class teachers arrange to meet with parents twice during the academic year. The first Parent/Teacher Consultations take place during the Autumn Term. Parents are allocated a ten-minute slot to discuss their child’s progress and needs. Should parents require a longer appointment, this can be arranged with the class teacher.
During the Spring Term, an Interim Report is sent out to parents, containing information regarding their child’s attainment and progress. This is sent approximately one week before the Parent/Teacher Consultations and forms the basis for discussion at the meeting.
At the end of the Summer Term, a written Annual Summary Report is sent to parents. This is a detailed report about the child’s performance during the year and again contains information regarding each child’s attainment and progress.
We are fortunate to have many parents and grandparents regularly coming in to help with many different things in school, including gardening, reading and art work. We always welcome more helpers and ask that parents complete a Disclosure and Barring check (formerly a Criminal Records Bureau check).
We often ask for parents to help with school trips and are very grateful for the support our helpers provide.
Parents are often invited to come in to school as guests to share in an aspect of their child’s learning. For example, we invite parents to join us for our display of costumes prior to the annual Lindfeld Village Day, or to share in the end of their child’s ‘Space Day’ or ‘Circus Skills Day’, etc.
